With its multiple interconnected objectives, the ForeStClim project requires a well functioning working strategy, effectively integrating all ForeStClim partners into the existing Work Packages.

The first work package “Regional climate scenarios” will be managed in the cross sectional and transnational acting Team C. The activities of this team are fundamental to the overall ForeStClim project. Its main objective will be to provide the model forcing data and organise information exchange pathways between partners in order to achieve the goal of assessing future potential climate change impacts on forest ecosystems.

Team D will develop the tools as basis for the management strategies in the Work Package “Development of tools for surveying forest site and forest stand shifts, risk assessment, water regime assessment and assessment of goods and services”, also in a multidisciplinary and transnational team work. Due to the complexity of this working package, Team D will be divided into several working groups:

  • surveying forest site and forest stand shifts (ecological response of the principal tree species, impact on forest growth, timber production and carbon sequestration, forest vegetation associations and impact on biodiversity)
  • risk assessment (secondary threats by fire, pests and diseases and windstorm damages)
  • water regime assessment (groundwater recharge, run-off, water retention, wetlands, erosion, discharge), and
  • the assessment of goods and services (revenue, employment, timber production, energy forests, touristic development and pedagogical issues).

With these tools developed by Team D, Team M will compile the future forestry management strategies in the Work Package “Ecological and economical sound forestry management strategies”. Team M will assess the different recommendations of Team D considering economy, policy objectives and ecological goods and services. To support this assessment a multicriteria analysis will be adapted to the needs of the ForeStClim-project. In this action a strategic decision support system, which is supported by GIS, for sustainable forestry management, forest protection and water management in forests dependent on the probable middle and long-term climate development and forest site shifting, will be developed.
The communication between the ForeStClim-project and its stakeholders and politicians is one of the main tasks of Team M. Processes of transnational coordination to adapt the strategy package, as biophysical and socio-economic conditions improve or worsen, will be implemented aimed to the MCPFE-policy cycles. This adaptation will be reviewed every 5 years following the MCPFE 5-years calendar. (MCPFE = Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe).

The regional implementation of transnational management and risk strategies will be done in the Work Package “Regional implementation of management and risk strategies and stakeholder involvement”, but in regional working groups taking the tools and methods which were transnationally adjusted by Team D and assessed by Team M.
The most important actions in this Work Package are:

  • the adoption of innovative modules in existing, but obsolescent regional forest planning and forest site surveying practices,
  • the implementation of the new site surveying practices in the partner regions, and
  • the implementation of the new strategies in demonstration sites in the partner areas of authority.

The experiences that are gained with the regional implementation will flow back to team M in the third working package to improve the recommended forestry strategies.

The stakeholders will be involved in all stages of the project. Hence this Work Package is engaged within all other Work Packages, and is supervising their work and results. Typical stakeholders will be appointed by the ForeStClim-project management once first results are available. Then, stakeholders should define their requirements to future forestry management strategies in view of their personal management objectives. During the course of the project they should assess the progress made.
